About Russell
I took sailing lessons before I was a teenager; first at Kitsilano Yacht Club then at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. Before that, I would spend the day fishing with my father just so I could drive the boat to and from Vanier Park. In my early 20's, while travelling, I ended up crewing on a 103' modern Italian schooner. When I left the yacht, I was First Mate. It was in Europe where I learned to varnish, repair a head, coastal navigation, go up a mast safely, change speedometers, handle large sails and sail at night. Upon my return, I went back to school and then ran Northwest Marine Distributors and the Boathouse Marine Supplies. It was there that I learned how to rebuild winches, splice rope (thanks Steve Crowe), choose and apply a wide variety of marine coatings and where I met Cher (ask me). It was also my entree to racing keel boats.
I started racing keel boats in the 1990's. crewing on boats from 24 to 70 feet. Until my daughter was born, pretty much all my vacations included a regatta. It wasn't until I had a family that I knew I needed my own boat. I am now on my 3rd and a 4th is in the works. We have had both power and sail and consider myself competent with both.
My choice to become a surveyor comes from my intense need to be on the ocean. My wife says I have salt water in my veins. I have had a previous career managing investments. Being a portfolio manager is about managing risk. You can't invest without risk but you can plan for it. Identify the risk, understand how it can impact you and value that impact. Then make your decision. Buying any asset is very similar. Buying a boat is an incredible journey of the heart. It is important to have the input and expertise of an impartial professional. Thats where I come in - I know you want the boat, my job is to show you what your heart can't see.
